Winter Themes, Roman Shields, and the Next Spearhead Idea
Winter Themes, Roman Shields, and the Next Spearhead Idea
Sometimes one picture is enough to send us straight into hobby planning mode.
At the start of the conversation we were, of course, already thinking about the practical question: when are we setting up the next Spearhead? But it immediately drifted into something equally dangerous for our free time and wallets — painting ideas.
Michał threw in a winter-themed reference and, honestly, we got it right away. There is something incredibly appealing about a full force painted around a strong shared idea, and snowy schemes are one of those themes that instantly make an army feel cohesive.

What really clicked for us in this chat was not just the winter palette itself, but the broader idea behind it: painting a whole regiment or force around one clear visual theme. Dubry pointed out that doing a lot of miniatures with one common concept — like in the video he had shared earlier — can create an absolutely fantastic final effect. And that is really the magic of army painting, isn’t it? A single mini can look great, but a whole unit built around one vision can look amazing on the table.
We also briefly wandered into conversion territory, which is always a fun place to end up. Dubry mentioned that he probably would not have come up with “ninja Eternals,” but a Roman-legion-inspired take sounded extremely cool to him. And honestly, same. That kind of reinterpretation can give an army a lot of identity without losing what makes the faction recognizable in the first place.
Michał also noticed that some of the modified bits — like alternate shields — seem to be available from sellers, which opens up a lot of possibilities for anyone who wants to push a theme further without scratch-building everything from zero. That is the kind of discovery that can very quickly turn a vague idea into a real project.
So this was one of those short chats that did exactly what hobby chats do best: we started with scheduling games, and within minutes we were imagining winter regiments, themed forces, and conversion-heavy Spearhead projects.
Now we just need to do the dangerous part: actually pick a date and decide whether we are only playing the next Spearhead… or also starting another painting scheme because one cool reference photo was enough to convince us.
What stuck with us
- winter-themed armies look fantastic
- a strong shared theme across many miniatures gives a great tabletop effect
- Roman-inspired conversions sound incredibly tempting
- custom bits like shields can be a great shortcut into a distinctive army look
- we should probably set that next Spearhead date before another hobby idea distracts us again
