Last-Minute Skaven Speedpainting Before Game Day
Painting against the clock
Sometimes hobby plans are nice and sensible. And sometimes it is the evening before a game, the deadline is tomorrow at 11, and the only reasonable response is pure speedpainting panic.
That was very much the vibe this time, with Michał going all-in on a Skaven painting sprint. The opening move: a Grey Seer done in 25 minutes on a Grey Seer undercoat. Fast, dirty, and exactly the kind of energy we respect.

The queue of shame, but make it immediate
The to-do list for the night was not small:
- 6 Stormfiends
- 20 Clanrats
- 6 Ratling Guns
- possibly swapping one unit idea for 6 Jezzails as proxies
- 6 manifestations, meaning spell models
When Ender asked the obvious question — whether all of that was supposed to be ready for tomorrow at 11 — the answer was simply: yes.
At that point, realism started to creep in a little. Michał figured the Clanrats might get dropped, which is fair enough when there are already 40 painted and the real priority is getting the more important pieces battle-ready.
We know this mood
Honestly, this is one of the most relatable parts of the hobby. We tell ourselves we have time. We definitely do not have time. Then suddenly the night before an event turns into a production line of basecoats, washes, quick highlights, and increasingly bold decisions about what is “good enough from three feet away.”
And you know what? We fully support it.
There is a special kind of satisfaction in getting an army over the line just in time for the table. Not every model needs to be a display piece. Sometimes the real victory is that the army is painted, coherent, and ready to throw down.
The real speedpainting philosophy
This little update also captures something we like a lot: when the deadline is real, priorities become crystal clear.
- Character first
- Big, expensive stuff next
- Utility pieces if possible
- Chaff only if the clock allows it
That is not cowardice. That is wisdom.
We are very curious how much of the list actually made it through the night, but even from this snapshot alone, the energy is immaculate: caffeine, determination, and Skaven nonsense.
If you have ever painted half an army in one evening while questioning your life choices, just know: you are among friends.
