Verminlord Steals the Show

We had one of those very relatable hobby moments this week: a quick chat about minis, a small side discovery, and then suddenly all attention went to one model towering over the rest.

At first, Michał was checking in about Tork Lensen and whether it was the standard admiral version or something different. A moment later the mystery was solved — it turned out to be the commemorative model. Always nice when a sculpt has that little extra bit of character.

But the real star of the exchange was definitely the Verminlord.

Michał dropped a photo and immediately summed it up perfectly: he really needs to build some kind of diorama for it, because the Verminlord looks beautiful against the rest of the collection. And honestly, we get it. Some models just have that presence — even before they get a scenic base or full display treatment, they already dominate the shelf.

Pegie’s reaction said it all in one word:

Sztos

And yes, that feels like the correct review.

What we really like here is that this is such a familiar stage in the painting side of the hobby. You finish or place a centerpiece miniature next to the rest of your army, and suddenly your brain is already racing ahead:

  • maybe it needs a proper diorama,
  • maybe the base should be expanded,
  • maybe the whole army deserves a better display setup now.

That’s the power of a standout model. It doesn’t just look good on its own — it changes how the whole force feels.

The Verminlord in context

Seeing a massive Skaven centerpiece model next to the rest of the collection is exactly the kind of thing that makes army painting satisfying. Rank-and-file troops give the army identity, but a model like this gives it drama. It becomes the thing your eye goes to first, the miniature that ties the whole project together.

And from the sound of it, this one is already begging for something more scenic around it.

Now we want that diorama

So this is us gently encouraging the next step: if a model already looks this good standing among the rest, a dedicated diorama really might be the right call. Not because it needs it to work — clearly it already does — but because some miniatures just earn that extra effort.

For now though, even as-is, the verdict from the chat stands:

Absolute banger.
