Darkoath Temptation and Primed Orruks: One Chat, Two Spearhead Directions
A dangerous amount of Spearhead browsing
Sometimes army-building starts with a carefully considered plan.
And sometimes it starts with: “their battle trait in Spearhead is really cool”.
That was very much the mood this time.
Michał dropped into chat with screenshots of the Darkoath rules and pretty quickly went from curiosity to the classic hobby conclusion: this might be his new Spearhead. Not because the models won him over visually, though. Quite the opposite — the verdict was immediate and brutally honest: they are ugly as night.
And honestly, that only made the whole thing funnier. We all know that kind of pick: the miniatures may not be love at first sight, but a neat rule, a fun mechanic, or a fresh playstyle can suddenly push an army right to the top of the queue.

The best kind of army-building motivation
We like these moments because they are a very real part of the hobby. Army-building is not always about chasing the strongest list or committing to a faction for years. Sometimes it is just about seeing one mechanic that sparks the imagination.
In this case, Darkoath seem to have done exactly that. A good Spearhead hook can be enough to make us rethink what we want to build next, especially when the format is small enough that a new project feels achievable instead of overwhelming.
That is one of the nicest things about Age of Sigmar: Spearhead right now: it makes impulsive faction crushes feel manageable.
Meanwhile: the Orruks are already moving
While Michał was considering a possible new project, Stas got asked the most important follow-up question in any hobby group chat:
how is the ork assembly going?
The answer was short and extremely satisfying: already primed.
That is always a great stage to see in a project. Once models have primer on them, they stop being just a pile of plastic and start feeling like an actual army in progress.

We love that contrast in one conversation: one person is being lured into a brand new Spearhead by a clever battle trait, while someone else is already pushing their force into the painting-ready stage.
Also: where did Kharadron Overlords go?
At the end, there was one more observation from Ender while browsing the official Spearhead page: apparently Kharadron Overlords are not there anymore.
We are not going to speculate too hard beyond what was said in chat, but it was definitely the kind of small discovery that makes you stop and double-check whether something changed quietly in the background.
Our takeaway
This was a very small exchange, but it captured a lot of what we enjoy about army-building:
- getting excited by rules before models,
- roasting a range while still wanting to collect it,
- checking in on each other’s progress,
- and noticing weird little updates around the game.
Right now the score seems to be:
- Michał — dangerously close to starting a Darkoath Spearhead,
- Stas — already has primed orks on the table,
- the rest of us — enabling both directions, obviously.
If Michał does go through with it, we are very curious whether the battle trait will be enough to overcome the “ugly as night” factor once the boxes actually land on the desk.
