A Very Tempting Slaves to Darkness Army of Renown
Michal dropped one of those hobby ideas into chat that immediately makes us go: oh no, this is dangerously cool.
This time it was an Age of Sigmar concept for Slaves to Darkness: an Army of Renown built around just a few absolutely massive centrepieces — Archaon, Abraxia, and 12 Varanguard.
And honestly? We get it. Those models look incredible.
The appeal of the elite list
There is something very satisfying about an army that is so focused. No filler, no distractions, just a wall of elite chaos cavalry and two huge named characters leading the charge.
Michal summed it up perfectly: he just really likes these miniatures. Sometimes that is more than enough reason to start planning an army.
The original inspiration
First came the official models that sold the whole idea:
Archaon

Abraxia

Varanguard

Looking at that lineup, it is very easy to understand the temptation. It is basically a greatest hits collection of some of the coolest Chaos models in the range.
The proxy plan
But of course, hobby brain did not stop at “these are cool”. Very quickly the idea turned into: what if we proxied the whole thing?
Michal shared an alternative set of models he was considering for the same army concept:
Archaon proxy idea

Abraxia proxy idea

Varanguard proxy idea

We really like this kind of project. A compact, elite army is already appealing from a collecting and painting perspective, and once you add a strong proxy theme on top, it starts feeling like a proper personal hobby vision rather than just copying a list from a book.
The real challenge: finding games
There is, however, one very practical issue here — and Michal pointed it out immediately.
For this to make sense, someone actually needs to play 2000-point games with him.
And that is the eternal truth behind so many army-building plans: the list can be amazing, the models can be gorgeous, the concept can be perfect… but it still helps if there is an opponent on the other side of the table.
Why we love ideas like this
Even if this army stays in the planning stage for a while, it is exactly the kind of hobby concept we enjoy talking about:
- a very clear visual identity,
- a tiny model count by Age of Sigmar standards,
- huge centrepiece energy,
- and plenty of room for proxies and personal style.
Will this Slaves to Darkness elite cavalry dream actually happen? We hope so — if only because we would really like to see that much Chaos thunder across the table.
And, apparently, somebody now needs to volunteer for 2000 points.
