Kharadron Frigate Ready for Paint… Eventually

We had one of those very hobby-real update moments this week: progress happened, but not quite in the order we originally imagined.

end3r had to take a few days off after almost cutting his thumb off, which is a pretty convincing reason to pause assembly for a bit. Thankfully, things still moved forward in the end, and the balloons and supports for the Kharadron Frigate are now finished. So, in theory, the whole model is finally ready for painting.

Kharadron Frigate balloons and supports

In practice, though, the paint stage will have to wait.

Before that happens, end3r wants to get stuck into assembling the Votann, ideally in time for Nerd Weekend. That means the Frigate is entering the classic hobby state of “technically ready” while sitting patiently on the shelf for at least a few more months.

There is also a very practical issue here: transport. As Stas immediately pointed out, once the balloons are on, this thing stops being easy to carry around. So for actual games, the current plan is simple: the Frigate will be used without the balloons attached until it is fully painted. No point gluing on the biggest and most awkward parts before the whole project is ready.

What we really like here is the plan for the painting side. Instead of jumping straight onto the centerpiece model, end3r is taking the sensible route and using the smaller Kharadron Overlords dwarfs as a learning project first. The order is already set:

  1. Arkanaut Company first, because they look like the simplest place to start.
  2. Then the rest of the Kharadron infantry and support pieces.
  3. And only at the very end: the Frigate.

Honestly, that sounds like the best possible approach. Big centerpiece models are cool, but they are also a great way to scare yourself out of painting if you start there. Getting some practice on the KO troops first should make the Frigate much less intimidating when its turn finally comes.

So for now, the ship is assembled, the balloons are done, the supports are done, and the painting plan exists — which in hobby terms is already a pretty solid victory.

Now we wait for Votann assembly, Nerd Weekend prep, and then the first painting lessons on some airborne duardin.

Hobby status

  • Kharadron Frigate: assembled enough to be considered ready for painting
  • Balloons and supports: finished
  • Balloons: not getting glued on yet for transport reasons
  • Next project: Votann assembly
  • Painting plan: start with Arkanaut Company, finish the Frigate last

We’re definitely looking forward to seeing how this one develops once paint finally enters the picture.
