From Double Boxes to 2k: KO Plans, Votann Proxies, and a Very Silly Skaven List
We had one of those classic hobby chats that starts with “I’ve got some boxes” and somehow ends with a completely cursed list idea.
This time the main topic was army-building for Age of Sigmar, with a side trip into proxy plans and one truly ridiculous Skaven concept.
Two boxes here, two boxes there
end3r mentioned that he has, or will soon have, two boxes of Kharadron Overlords and two boxes of Leagues of Votann. That immediately got our gears turning, because having that kind of pile of plastic usually means one thing: it is time to start testing weird ideas.
For us, the interesting part is that this is not just about building one force straight from the boxes. It is also about seeing how far we can stretch what is already on hand, what can be proxied for test games, and how quickly we can get something playable on the table.
First goal: Spearhead
Before going full 2000-point nonsense, end3r said he would first like to play at least one game of Spearhead. That feels very sensible and very familiar to us — before committing to a bigger list, it is always nice to get a feel for the army in a smaller format.
After that, though, the plan opens up. If Spearhead goes well, we can start experimenting with 2k Kharadron Overlords.
Making 2k KO happen
At the moment, end3r counted his current Kharadron Overlords collection at 1440 points. With a potential Ironclad proxy, that would jump to 1900 points, which is already very close to a full-size game.
The last step would be to add Votann warrior proxies as Arkanauts for another 90 points, and suddenly the list reaches a neat 2000 points.
That is exactly the kind of army-building we enjoy: not theory in a vacuum, but practical list construction based on what is actually available. A few real models, one key proxy, one clever stand-in unit, and a testable army appears.
The Ironclad problem
The only real snag in the plan is the Ironclad. end3r said he would need some kind of proxy for it, though he might be able to dig through models and find something suitable.
Honestly, that feels like a very normal stage in any Warhammer project. There is always that one centerpiece model that decides whether the list is “almost there” or “ready to go.” In this case, the Ironclad is clearly that model.
If we can sort that out, then the jump from “I have some dwarfs and some ideas” to “let’s play 2k” becomes very realistic.
Meanwhile: Michal brought a Skaven crime against listbuilding
While all of this was going on, michalbe casually dropped a 2000-point Skaven list to test, and it was… well, beautiful in the worst possible way.
The list was called Teenage Mutant Ninja Rat, and it was basically a wall of Deathmasters. So many Deathmasters. A deeply unserious amount of Deathmasters.
Here is the screenshot from the chat:

Five Deathmasters in regiments, then a whole parade of auxiliary Deathmasters, all wrapped in a proper 2000-point shell with a Gnawhole and enough nonsense to make us immediately want to see it on a table.
We are not saying this is how Skaven were meant to be played.
We are saying that if someone posts a list like this, we absolutely want to know what happens next.
The real hobby energy here
What we like most about this exchange is how recognizable it is:
- someone has a couple of boxes and starts counting points,
- someone else is already thinking about test games,
- proxies enter the discussion almost immediately,
- and then, for no tactical reason whatsoever, a joke list appears and steals part of the spotlight.
That is army-building in the real world. Not polished, not final, but full of momentum.
Right now the most likely next step seems to be:
- get a Spearhead game in,
- figure out a workable Ironclad proxy,
- pad out the last points with Votann-as-Arkanauts,
- and then see how 2k KO actually feels on the table.
And, ideally, at some point also witness the Deathmaster swarm in action, because once a list like that exists, it deserves at least one game.
What comes next
So for now, the project status is simple: Kharadron Overlords are very close to 2000 points, thanks to a mix of owned models and planned proxies, and there is a good chance that this will turn into actual test games soon.
We always like these early listbuilding moments, because they are where armies stop being just boxes on a shelf and start becoming real hobby plans.
If the KO experiment happens, we will definitely want to report back on whether the proxy route worked, how the army felt at 2k, and whether the Votann stand-ins did the job.
And if the rat ninjas hit the table first… even better.
