1,499 Points from a Starter Box? Bretonnians Went In Hard

1,499 Points from a Starter Box? Bretonnians Went In Hard

Sometimes a hobby purchase just clicks.

This was one of those moments where we looked at the numbers and immediately knew: this was a seriously good deal.

As Stas summed it up, the old Orc battalion at 2d6 used to cost 519, so just a battalion plus the rulebook would already come out more expensive than what was paid for the whole box here. And this box? It comes with roughly 2.5 times more points, plus dice, measuring tools, templates, and the rulebook as well. Honestly: mega.

Starter box value that actually feels exciting

The part that really got us talking was that this was not just “good value” in the vague marketing sense. It was the kind of value that immediately translates into a real army list.

Wilini put together a 1499/1500 Bretonnian list straight from the starter box, with only one tiny practical tweak needed:

kitbash one Men-at-Arms model into a sergeant

That’s it. No hunting for three extra blisters, no awkward “almost playable” limbo, no padding the list with random purchases just to hit a sensible game size.

The 1499-point Bretonnian list

Here’s the list Wilini shared:

  • 411 – Duke, Lance, Shield, Virtue of Heroism, General, Royal Pegasus, Gromil Great Helm, The Seal Of Parravon, Sirienne’s Locket
  • 54 – Sergeants-At-Arms, Halberd, Shield, Burning Blade
  • 173 – 31 Men-At-Arms, Yeoman, Grail Monk, Blessed Tryptich, Standard Bearer, Musician
  • 190 – 6 Mounted Knights of the Realm, The Knight’s Vow, First Knight, Burning Blade, Standard Bearer, Banner of Chalons, Musician
  • 195 – 6 Mounted Knights of the Realm, The Knight’s Vow, First Knight, Burning Blade, Standard Bearer, War Banner, Musician
  • 119 – 12 Peasant Bowmen, Light Armour, Defensive Stakes, Burning Braziers, Villein, Standard Bearer, Musician
  • 119 – 12 Peasant Bowmen, Light Armour, Defensive Stakes, Burning Braziers, Villein, Standard Bearer, Musician
  • 238 – 3 Pegasus Knights, The Knight’s Vow, First Knight, Standard Bearer, Razor Standard, Musician

Total: 1499/1500

Wilini mentioned this was based on a recommended list he found, adjusted for current points. In the end the changes were minimal — he dropped one sergeant sword upgrade and that was basically enough to make it all fit.

And yeah, the verdict in chat was simple:

Kozak.

Why we like this so much

What we love here is how clean this army-building path is.

From one box, you get a force that already looks like a proper Bretonnian army:

  • a big character on Royal Pegasus
  • a solid Men-at-Arms block
  • two units of Knights of the Realm
  • two units of Bowmen
  • Pegasus Knights for speed and pressure

That’s not a weird compromise list. That’s an actual army with a clear identity.

For anyone getting into Warhammer: The Old World, this is exactly the kind of entry point we want to see more often: buy a box, build it, make one tiny conversion, and you are basically ready to play a full 1500-point game.

Also: yes, we can see the excitement building

The final comment from End3r said it all:

we can see someone got hooked ;]

Fair.

Because this is exactly how it starts. First it’s “nice price.” Then it’s “wait, the rulebook is included too.” Then suddenly there’s a full 1499-point list written out in detail at midnight.

We know the feeling.

Hobby-wise, this is the sweet spot

There’s something especially satisfying about army-building when the collection and the list line up this neatly. It makes the next steps feel obvious:

  • build the box
  • sort out the sergeant kitbash
  • get some paint on the knights and peasants
  • put the army on the table

No drama, no spreadsheet suffering, just momentum.

And honestly, momentum is one of the most valuable things in this hobby.

If this is the beginning of a Bretonnian force, then it’s a very strong start.

And if we’re being honest, finding out that a starter can turn into a nearly perfect 1500-point list this cleanly is exactly the kind of thing that gets us excited too.
