Old World Harce at Matisoft: Bretonnian Knight Wins the Opening Duel

Old World harce at Matisoft

Sometimes a battle report is less about the full turn-by-turn and more about one really cool moment that makes everyone around the table stop and smile. That was exactly the case this time at Matisoft, where the guys were playing Warhammer: The Old World and immediately ran into one of those flavorful mechanics that we absolutely love.

As Michał pointed out, there are at least two mechanics in TOW that can affect who gets the first turn. One is the Blessing of the Lady for Bretonnia, and the other is the Chaos Warriors pre-battle duel. And this game went straight into that second one.

The idea is great: one of the Chaos champions challenges an enemy champion before the battle properly gets going. If nobody on the opposing side accepts, Chaos gets the first turn. But if someone steps forward and accepts the duel, then the side whose champion wins gets to begin.

Stas immediately dropped a lovely bit of old-school terminology here too — in Polish, this kind of pre-battle clash used to be called “harce”, and the warriors taking part were “harcownicy”. Honestly, that fits the mood perfectly.

And yes — the lads actually did it on the table.

What makes it even better is that this wasn’t just a quick ceremonial poke with swords. The duel lasted three turns, which is already a great little story in itself, and in the end the Bretonnian knight won. That’s such a cinematic opening for a game: champions meeting before the armies fully crash together, everyone watching, and the result shaping the start of the battle.

There was also a quick observation from the sideline that with the table packed full of models, getting into someone’s flank probably wouldn’t be easy early on. But Michał reckoned that by turn two or three there should be more room to maneuver, which sounds about right for these big, crowded Old World battle lines. First everything is shoulder-to-shoulder, and then the gaps start to appear.

And because no greenskin conversation is complete without at least one bit of absolute nonsense energy: Orcs have Foot of Gork.

That final message from Wilini — “Kozacko” — really says it all. Because yes, it is. We’re always happy when rules aren’t just mechanical, but actively create memorable little stories before the main battle has even properly started. This pre-battle duel is exactly that kind of rule.

So while this isn’t a full battle report with deployment maps and score breakdowns, it is a great snapshot of why we enjoy The Old World so much: flavorful rules, cinematic moments, and those tiny details that make a game feel like a story instead of just a sequence of activations.

If the rest of the battle was even half as fun as the opening harce, then the guys definitely had a good day at Matisoft.
