Salamanders vs World Eaters in the Colosseum League Finale

Salamanders vs World Eaters in the Colosseum League Finale

The last game of the last round of the Colosseum league gave us exactly the kind of pairing we love reading about: a blood-hungry pack of World Eaters Berzerkers crashing into the battle-hardened, flame-soaked assault force of the Salamanders.

This one came from end3r, and it sounds like a proper nail-biter at the start before turning into a very satisfying comeback for the sons of Vulkan.

Salamanders and World Eaters facing off

Before the game even began, there was an important pre-battle win for the Salamanders. That decision shaped the whole match. World Eaters got to choose the primary mission, Terraform, which is awkward for shooting armies because you need to give up actions to score it properly. In exchange, the Salamanders got to pick the twist that mattered most in this matchup: Point Blank, letting units shoot while in engagement range.

Against a melee army like World Eaters, that was huge.

The opening was exactly what you’d expect: the World Eaters pushed forward aggressively, while the Salamanders had to think very carefully about how to respond. Going all-in with an Advance and trying to blast away recklessly would likely end in a massacre in the following round. On the other hand, hiding everything behind cover also felt bad, because the Berzerkers would just sit on objectives and rack up points.

So the Salamanders went for a classic plan: screen the Infernus Marines with Assault Intercessors. The idea was simple and very Salamanders-y — let the front line absorb the initial impact long enough for the Infernus squad to get their chance, and then answer at point-blank range with pyreblasters.

The lines close and the pressure builds

At first, it did not look great. The Salamanders failed to get even a single meaningful Overwatch into the oncoming World Eaters, and the Assault Intercessors went down pretty quickly. But the sacrifice did exactly what it needed to do: it bought just enough time.

Enough Infernus Marines survived to avenge their brothers by burning down the attacking Berzerkers. On top of that, the Salamanders managed to take out the Goremongers with grenades, while the ATV and Eradicators unloaded every available melta shot into the Hellbrute, deleting it immediately.

That swing seems to have been the key moment of the game. Once the pressure wave broke, the Salamanders were able to charge the remains of the Berzerkers themselves, regain control of the table, and push the momentum fully in their favor. To top it off, the Salamanders Captain personally delivered the finishing blow to the Master of Executions.

After the counterpunch, the battlefield belongs to the Salamanders

By that point, not much was left for the World Eaters. On the Salamanders side, the survivors were still in very respectable shape: an untouched Captain, two remaining Infernus Marines, the ATV team hanging on with 2 wounds left, and a full Eradicator squad. Across from them, only the Jakhals remained, and they were quickly shot off the board.

The actual fighting ended in round four, with the rest of the game basically becoming a matter of scoring out the final rounds. The Salamanders closed it out with a 13:7 victory.

And that result mattered beyond just this one game.

Thanks to that win, end3r finished the league in 2nd place overall, just 10 points behind the organizer — who, as we were told, handed out a brutal 20:0 earlier in the event. Still, the rest of the results were more than solid: 13:7, 20:0, 20:0, 13:7. Not bad at all.

That also means there should be a little prize coupon involved — which, let’s be honest, in hobby terms usually translates directly into paints or brushes. Exactly as it should.

end3r also mentioned hoping for another Colosseum league in the future, because there are already ideas brewing for testing new list concepts — especially squeezing some different infantry into an Impulsor, since so many stratagems in the Firestorm Assault Force key off vehicles.

That sounds like exactly the right kind of post-league energy: finish high, collect the prize, and immediately start thinking about the next experiment.

To wrap it up, here is the final ranking screenshot from the closed standings:

Big grats again to end3r from all of us — a strong finish, a fun-sounding game, and a very fitting final battle for the league.
