Slow but Steady Painting Progress: Angels of Death, Bretonnians, and a Deadline Challenge
We love these little hobby check-ins, especially when they come with a mix of motivation, deadlines, and that very familiar “just an hour here or there in the evening” kind of progress.
This time, end3r dropped an update on his Angels of Death force. The pace has been slow, but definitely forward-moving — and honestly, that is how a lot of real hobby progress looks. A bit of painting after work, a bit more the next evening, and suddenly the army is getting closer to the finish line.
There are still plenty of details left to do, but as end3r put it: it is already closer to done than not. And that always feels good.
A personal deadline: finish AoD for the tournament
The bigger push behind this progress is a personal challenge: finish the Angels of Death painting 100% before the Manewrowy tournament on August 8th. That is exactly the kind of self-imposed deadline that can work wonders for getting miniatures over the line.
Even better, the plan does not stop there. After AoD, the next target is Squats for the Necromunda campaign. That may be an even bigger challenge, because a few games have already been played with them while they are still only wearing their basic green armour. Very relatable energy there.
New paints, new basing plans
To help bring the AoD project together, end3r picked up a few new supplies:
- Plasma Glow
- Technical Martian Ironearth
- matte varnish
The reason for the new paint choices is nicely practical. A regular purple effect did not work out well enough on the Deathwatch, so Plasma Glow is meant to improve that part. On the basing side, Martian Ironearth is there to introduce at least a bit of red into the AoD bases — something warmer and more dramatic than the grey Astrogranite used on the Deathwatch, but without going fully into a lava effect.
That sounds like a really smart middle ground to us: enough contrast to make the bases stand out, but still within a style that feels manageable and achievable. And with the matte varnish added to the pile, the full painting-and-finishing set is now ready.
Meanwhile on the Bretonnian front
On the other side of the hobby table, wilini is also lining up the next steps. After finishing the Green Knight and the Damsels, the plan now is to move on to the primed archers.
Before that, though, there is the classic hobby admin phase:
- order more primers,
- base everything else,
- and generally prepare the rest of the Bretonnia collection for painting.
Not the flashiest stage of the process, maybe, but absolutely the kind of groundwork that makes later painting sessions much smoother.
The kind of progress we always like to see
What we like most in updates like this is that they feel very real. No giant overnight army completion. Just steady progress, small purchases to solve specific hobby problems, and a couple of very honest deadlines to keep the momentum going.
So: fingers crossed for end3r hitting the August 8th tournament goal, and for both the AoD and Squats getting properly finished. And on the fantasy side, we are looking forward to seeing those Bretonnian archers and the rest of the army move from prep stage to paint stage.
Slowly, steadily, but definitely forward.
