Following the Team Event Live on Discord
We had one of those very hobby-community evenings where a tournament result suddenly turns into live commentary on Discord, jokes, and a bit of second-hand glory.
Apparently the underdogs smashed the favourites in the final — the Spanish team — and we were following it live yesterday on the NorthHammer Discord. That alone would already be enough for a good morning-after chat, but then Ewa sent over a screenshot with the wonderfully pointed question: “didn’t you happen to lose to one of them recently?”
And honestly, that is exactly the kind of energy we appreciate in this hobby.
As Stas summed it up perfectly: losing to someone like that is basically like winning.
That kind of result always adds a fun extra layer to previous games. A normal loss can suddenly get reclassified into a quality loss once the other player goes on to crush top favourites in a final. We’re absolutely counting that as acceptable hobby mathematics.
At the same time, the 40k team ended up in 14th place, so it sounds like this was one of those events with very different stories depending on which system or bracket you were watching. One side gets the giant upset and all the excitement, the other lands in that very respectable-but-not-headline-grabbing middle ground.
Still, this is exactly why we like following big events together, especially through community spaces like Discord. Even if we’re not there in person, there’s something great about watching the reactions roll in live, seeing screenshots circulate the next morning, and immediately turning results into banter.
If this keeps up, we may need to start tracking which of our old defeats are actually secret badges of honour.
